Why Keeping It Simple Is The Best Social Media Strategy

People’s lives are hard & complicated enough. Keep it simple for them.

We’re always told to be the authority when presenting ourselves online. While this is true & helpful, there are a lot of misconceptions surrounding this piece of advice, which we want to clear up in this blog. P.S. This is relevant for both writing copy as well as talking videos on social media. Learning how to put your point across should be an integral part of your social media strategy, so … make sure you keep reading!

WHAT YOU THINK BEING AN AUTHORITY MEANS

There is so much misconception surrounding the piece of advice of being an authority. We usually tend to assume that this means…

  • using as many words as possible,

  • using “smart” sounding words,

  • making your sentences (written or spoken) as long as possible.

We’re under the impression that doing so will make us sound more knowledgeable & therefore, more like an authority. Well, we’re here to tell you to ditch that mentality. This actually has the OPPOSITE effect on your target audience.

PEOPLE WANT SIMPLICITY

Sounding too complicated repels your target audience from your videos. Why? Because no matter what industry you’re in, and no matter what level of knowledge your target audience are at — people are always seeking for simplicity. And yes, that’s across the board!

The everyday, modern way of life is complicated & stressful enough. If your goal is to draw in your audience, then, you want to work on keeping it simple - again, in your written copy & in the words you speak on video. If you’re a business active on social media, chances are you do both! Ever wonder why the most basic, simplistic videos perform best & go viral? That’s exactly what we’re saying, in action.

HOW TO KEEP IT SIMPLE

Just because people want simplicity, it doesn’t necessarily mean that you have to water down your concepts and/or teachings. It simply means that if the subject you’re speaking about is complex - aim to simplify it & to help them understand. If you scroll down to our earlier blogs, you might notice that we were guilty of this too (calling ourselves out!), as marketing is not the simplest topic to explain. Here are some quick tips that will help you KIS (keep it simple) in your copy & spoken words…

  • Explaining something like you’re speaking to an 8-year old! A great example of someone doing this is this creator on TikTok. His content is complex, informative, yet easy to understand. Not only is his language simple, but his filming style & video format help him KIS.

  • Breaking it down in 3 points or 3 steps (proven that it’s easier for the brain to understand when broken down like this).

  • Remember that less is more! Using more words doesn’t make you sound smarter! Using less words, but choosing them correctly, is the best way to KIS in both your copy & speaking.

  • Figure out what you want to put across. Write it down. If you’re writing copy - read your point again. If you’re speaking, practice saying the sentence. When you do this (practice), you’ll often find that you can package your point across in a better way & tighten what you want to say!

STAY COMMITTED.

It can be hard, especially when you’re an expert in your field & you KNOW all the fancy-terms, but stay committed to keeping it simple.
