ChatGPT: To Use or Not To Use?

ChatGPT is here for good… here’s how to navigate it on social media 💭

A couple of months back, ChatGPT burst onto the scene for everyone, and suddenly, memes about it flooded the realm of social media marketing. There was this one post on LinkedIn that really caught our eye. It kicked off with a bold headline - 'AI is coming for our jobs'. The emergence of ChatGPT and similar AI tools sparked a wave of doubts - could social media managers be swapped out by machines? Fast forward to now, and we've cracked the code on how to make this AI tool work like a charm. Stick around for our ultimate tips!

ChatGPT explained

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ve probably heard of ChatGPT. Developed by OpenAI, ChatGPT is an advanced artificial intelligence (AI). It generates human-like text responses in seconds. Basically, put in a command or question, and voilà - your response will be there in seconds. Gotta love the power of technology- right?

Well, Chat GPT comes with equal parts scepticism as it did with excitement. Many people have concerns about AI, as it gets its information directly from the internet, which can be unreliable at times. The takeaway? AI-generated content shouldn’t be a direct copy and paste. Our take: use it for content inspiration and to save time on the foundation of your copywriting, but you’ll need a human touch to make the most out of it, and that goes for social media too. Here are our tips on using ChatGPT effectively…

1. Be specific with your prompts

When it comes to writing strong ChatGPT prompts, it’s all in the details. Let’s say you wanted to research which influencers aligned with your brand.

Instead of: “Tell me the top influencers right now”

Try: “List the top [micro/macro] influencers in the [niche] space’. Include a mix of all genders, ages, sexuality and races”

Let’s say you have a sustainable swimwear brand. Writing a vague command such as “write a caption for a fashion brand” is not an effective way to use ChatGPT! You want to make it as specific as possible. Include:

  • Description of the brand

  • Audience- age, gender(s), location(s)

  • Tone of Voice

  • Social platform

Instead of: “Write me a caption for a fashion brand.”

Try: “Write a caption for a fashion brand selling swimwear. The audience is Gen-Z and Millenials, between 16-40 years old. The post will be on Instagram and outlines the ways the brand focuses on sustainability. Write this in a fun but professional tone.”

The trick is to be as specific as possible! You won’t get effective responses if you keep it brief, so load it up with the points above and you’ll have a great starting point!

2. Play around with tone

Okay, you’ll defo need a human touch here. Think about it — if every social media manager used a hard copy and paste from Chat GPT, we’d all start to sound the same. Tap into the basics of marketing, and add your human, expert touch to your brand tone. It’s great for a starting point with copy for those days you’re feeling a little uninspired, but remember that you control the brand’s tone.

One way that is great to save time is asking ChatGPT to “rewrite this but in a fun, energetic tone” or “rewrite this in a professional, tone” — depending on your brand’s tone of voice (TOV). Again, you’ll need to edit slightly but it’s a great time-saving hack!

3. Don’t just copy and paste

Simply copying and pasting is a huge no-no. As we mentioned, ChatGPT can have errors — so it’s a good idea to fact-check its responses. Our tip to counteracting this is to use Google to verify data and a plagiarism tool to avoid plagiarised copy. ChatGPT is a great tool to use as a starting place, but ultimately adding your unique touch is so important - especially when marketing to Gen-Z’s who value authenticity.

Summary

So, while the AI bots aren’t taking over yet, embracing AI as a social media manager = is a surefire way to stay on top of the latest trends, streamline the nitty gritty, and kill it on social.  What do you think about ChatGPT? Let us know in the comments below ⬇️
