TikTok Is In Its Growth Era.

Is TikTok coming for Amazon, Google & Youtube? 🤔

TikTok remains one of the fastest-growing social platforms worldwide. In fact, TikTok was the most downloaded application of 2022 with 879.2 million global downloads.

I’m sure we’ve all seen the news on TikTok potentially being banned, especially a few weeks ago at the hearing which ironically, was all over TikTok. But, the power of TikTok in the social media marketing world is undeniable (we’re not biased I swear! 😉). TikTok is coming for the big players Amazon (with their shop), Google (with their search engine) and YouTube (video + search engine). Keep reading to find out more about why TikTok is coming for the big supergiants and an update on the TikTok ban situation…

Everything you need to know about the potential TikTok ban ⬇️

In recent months, lawmakers in the United States, Europe and Canada have progressed efforts to restrict access to TikTok, the massively popular short-form video app that is owned by the Chinese company ByteDance, due to potential security threats.

On March 23, TikTok’s chief executive, Shou Chew, was grilled about the app’s relationship with its parent company in an almost 5 hour hearing in front of The White House committee. The app has been banned in India since mid-2020, and some countries have banned the app from government official devices and the military.

For us UK folks, we’re in the clear (for now) so don’t panic! Let’s make the most of its benefits marketing wise Here’s why we love TikTok, and why in our opinion it’s one of the best social media marketing channels rn!

TikTok is coming for Amazon (with their shop) 🛒

TikTok shop is a full-on entry into the world of e-commerce. TikTok Shop provides a way for TikTok users to buy products in the app without opening a web browser to go to a separate eCommerce store. According to the company, "TikTok Shopping is the suite of solutions, features, and tools that give businesses the opportunity to tap into the power of commerce on TikTok.”

Customers can browse through and select products within TikTok and then buy the product. The best part is you can tag products used in your Tik Tok videos so it’s one click to land on the product page. You can also tie in live shopping offers, real-time demos, and live-streamed product showcases with relevant links to buy products and services. Is TikTok coming for Amazon with its ease of shopping? We think combining short-form video content and eCommerce is genius in the marketing world!

Profiles have a dedicated Shopping tab on its profile. This is represented by a shopping bag icon just underneath the bio. Tap through and you’ll find all the products, as seen in viral beauty company The Beauty Crop TikTok Shop!

TikTok is coming for Google (with their search engine) 💭

To put it bluntly, Google is soooo 5 years ago. For Gen Z, TikTok has become the new search engine. Need to find a nice restaurant or the best skincare products? Young people are turning to TikTok to search for answers. In fact, 40% of Gen Z prefer searching for info on TikTok than Instagram or Google. The app’s short-form video content is more relatable to Gen Z, the digitally native generation who value authenticity and humanness to brands, and is also arguably easier to understand than sorting through articles on Google. It’s the notion that real people are delivering information, rather than faceless websites.

The app was known for its viral dances and music, but increasingly it’s also becoming known as a search engine too. The algorithm pre-empts your interests with search suggestions you may like.

TikTok is coming for YouTube (video search engine) 🤳

To some extent, it is like YouTube on steroids. The quick, fast-paced nature of TikTok videos has started eating into YouTube dominance. YouTube’s penetration is reaching a ceiling, while TikTok’s is still rising fast; By 2025 it’s estimated that there will be 24.2 million US TikTok users ages 18 to 24 and 26.6 million US YouTube users. Although TikTok users can upload videos up to 10 minutes, most still upload 15-second clips, as TikTok offers more musical backing options for videos of this length. Short-form content is the vibe atm! Do you spend more time on TikTok or Youtube? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
